Excerpt from Chapter 22:
Spencer looked in the closet. A little girl no more than three years old was sitting on the floor with a chain around her neck. The other end of the chain was attached to a nail in the wall. She was filthy and had scars on her arm and two on her head.
Cigarette butts were on the floor. There was a dog bowl on the floor with what appeared to be food scraps.
Spencer had never seen such a sad-eyed person in all his life. Her little dress was filthy and she had no undergarments on. He bent down on his knees by the little child and began to cry.
The child tried to duck back in the corner of the closet as if she was expecting to be hurt again.
Spencer was on his knees. He held out his arms to the child but she only backed further into the corner.
Spencer turned to Mrs. Helton and then back to the child.
"Come here, Sweetheart. No one is going to hurt you ever again." Spencer yanked the chain from the wall. He stretched his arms out once again and lifted the child into his arms. He removed the chain from around her neck. He noticed a number of scars and he knew they had to be cigarette burns from the cigarettes on the floor.

George M. Baucum worked as a Texas law enforcement officer and college professor until he retired in 1995 to spend time writing novels, including Black Angel and The Deputy. He lives in Duncan, Oklahoma.
